Safeguarding

This company funds a children's home. That makes the following rules more important, not less, and they are published so you can hold us to them.

No trip visits the children's home

Not as an excursion, not as a half-day, not as a special arrangement for guests who ask kindly and mean every word of it. There is no version of this we will agree to.

Orphanage tourism harms children. A rotation of visiting strangers forming short attachments and leaving does measurable damage to children who have already lost people. And where visitors become a source of income, institutions elsewhere have been shown to recruit children who have living families. We will not be part of building that demand, however small our contribution would be.

If you want to see where your money goes, ask us for the accounts. That is a better answer than a visit, and it is one we can give.

No photographs of the children on this website

You will not find a child's face used to sell a safari here. It is the oldest device in charity marketing and we are not using it. Where we ever publish anything about the home's work, it will not combine a face, a full name and a location.

What we ask of you

  • Please do not ask your guide to arrange a visit to the home. They will say no, and it puts them in an awkward position with people they are trying to look after.
  • If children approach you in a village, engaging with them is normal and human. Photographing them and posting it is a different thing — ask an adult first, and accept no.
  • Do not give money or sweets to children directly. It teaches a village that begging from visitors works, and it takes children out of school to do it.

Reporting a concern

If you ever see anything on one of our trips that worries you about a child's safety, tell Titus immediately and directly. If you would rather not raise it with him, say so and we will give you an independent contact. We would far rather hear a concern that turns out to be nothing than not hear one that was something.

Why this page exists at all

Most tour operators do not publish a safeguarding policy. We do because we are unusual in a specific way — the operator and the children's home are the same family — and that combination is exactly the one that deserves scrutiny rather than trust. Publishing the rules is how we make it possible for you to check that we keep them.
